The City of Hampton has Proclaimed August 20th of each year as African Landing Day.
It was the latter part of August 1619 when the first ship bringing enslaved Africans to English North America came ashore at Point Comfort in Hampton. These first Africans to arrive in would lead to the beginning of the institution of slavery in America.
Come help us to REMEMBER the first arrival, and our ancestors who lost their lives through the Middle Passage, and endured 246 years of bondage.
